Working Together for Smarter Vineyard Monitoring in Catalonia

When discussing digital agriculture, it is easy to focus on technology. Drones, sensors, artificial intelligence, and satellite imagery often take centre stage. Yet one of the most valuable outcomes of the ICAERUS vineyard monitoring activities in Catalonia has been something less visible: the development of a community that brings together people with different expertise around a shared challenge.

Throughout the ICAERUS project, vineyard monitoring activities have connected growers, agronomists, technology providers, researchers, and public stakeholders interested in improving how vineyards are observed and managed. While each group contributes different knowledge, the project has demonstrated that the greatest value often emerges when these perspectives are combined.

The Catalan wine sector faces many of the same pressures experienced across Europe. Climate variability, water management, disease pressure, labour constraints, and increasing sustainability requirements all demand better information and faster decision-making. Digital tools offer significant opportunities, but their adoption depends on trust, understanding, and practical relevance.

The ICAERUS Use Case 1 activities have provided a framework where these conversations can take place. This has been strengthened throughout the project by the generous support and network of the Agricultural Innovation department Catalan government, with a special thanks to Albert Domingo Roigé.

Drone flights and remote sensing campaigns have generated detailed observations of vineyard conditions. Agronomists have contributed expertise in interpreting crop responses. Researchers have explored methods for extracting actionable information from imagery and environmental data. Vineyard managers have provided essential field knowledge and practical feedback on what information is most useful in day-to-day operations.

This collaborative process has highlighted an important lesson: effective innovation is rarely linear.

A drone image alone does not improve vineyard management. Neither does a weather station, an algorithm, or a satellite image. Value is created when information is discussed, interpreted, and integrated into management decisions.

One of the strengths of the ICAERUS approach has been the creation of opportunities for these interactions. Participants have not simply tested technologies; they have collectively explored how technologies fit within existing agricultural practices and how they can support future challenges.

The result has been the emergence of a growing regional network of stakeholders interested in digital viticulture. Relationships established during field demonstrations, workshops, monitoring campaigns, and technical discussions continue to generate new ideas and opportunities for collaboration.

This network represents an important legacy of the project.

As agricultural technologies become increasingly sophisticated, the need for collaboration becomes even more important. Farmers require trusted information. Researchers benefit from real-world feedback. Technology providers need to understand operational realities. Public institutions seek evidence-based approaches to sustainability and resilience.

The ICAERUS project has demonstrated that innovation ecosystems are built not only through technology development but also through the communities that form around those technologies.

In Catalonia, the vineyard monitoring activities have shown how collaboration can strengthen the connection between research, technology, and practice. These connections will continue to be valuable long after individual project activities have concluded.

Perhaps one of the most important outcomes of ICAERUS is not simply what we have learned about vineyard monitoring, but who we have learned it with.
