Monitoring grazing herds is challenging and time consuming, and livestock farming is labour-intensive, providing limited incentives for young rural dwellers.
This UC will use 2 farms :
i) to explore the capacity of drone monitoring for reducing labour intensity and improving work conditions while observing the impact on cattle and sheep herd behaviour ;
ii) to explore the multi-purpose character of drones on grassland based livestock farming territories.
Evaluate drone solutions for monitoring different grazing cattle and sheep systems
Assess labour-reduction capabilities of drone-based herd monitoring
Examine governance models and drone adoption barriers and drivers
Quantify the cost, labour and time saving impact of drones for livestock monitoring
Identify drivers and barriers for drone adoption
Support grazing livestock systems to better meet society’s demand for free-range animal products
Increase farmers’ quality of life by improving work conditions
